There is a new road marking in Elmhurst, called a Sharrow. Sharrows indicate a shared lane environment for bicycles and automobiles but can also include scooters and skateboarders. Following the recommendations of the Elmhurst Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, you will find them on streets that are part of Elmhurst’s designated bike routes. Whether you’re on a road marked with a sharrow or not, the law in Illinois says you must give a bicyclist a minimum of 3 feet when passing them. The law also says vehicles can drive over the yellow line in the center of the road to pass a bicycle if it is safe. Cyclists have the right to remain in the center of a lane until they feel safe enough for a vehicle to pass them with 3 feet between them.
Safety Tip – Remember to use lights and wear reflective clothing when walking the dog, going for a run, riding your bike, and scooter or just taking a walk. This applies to everyone, even those remaining on the sidewalk while enjoying outdoor activities. Help drivers and other outdoor users see you!
