Rafael Blanco: Reflecting on a Decade of Public Art

September 7th 2024 – January 5th 2025

The Elmhurst Art Museum has welcomed its newest exhibit spotlighting the awe-inspiring work of artist Rafael Blanco. Based in Aurora Illinois, Blanco has spent the past 10 years collaborating with cities all across the country to create murals that not only appeal to, but connect with the public. If you’ve seen Elmhurst’s Be Bold mural, then you’re familiar with his talents as a visual public artist.

Blanco is passionate about wanting everyone to be able to experience art in their own communities, so for a decade now, he has embraced the idea of “Ditching the Studio” as way to bring art into public spaces. Much of his work has been influenced by his experience as an immigrant; reflecting on what it means to embrace new cultures while preserving one’s authenticity.

Being his first solo museum exhibition, “Rafael Blanco: Reflecting on a Decade of Public Art” creates an environment where public art meets studio art. Viewers will be immersed in an artistic journey through the transformation of the Elmhurst Art Museum to an urban landscape; exploring murals and other visual works of Blanco’s that have not previously been showcased to the public. Come celebrate, discover, and experience the beauty Rafael Blanco’s Public Art.
